Revenue reporting case: monthly insight with Exact Online and Power BI

Revenue reporting case: glass facade reflecting the sky

The client

A data-processing company with a broad B2B client base

A Dutch provider of data-processing and document services, with clients in the Netherlands and the German-speaking market. Clients sit in portfolios per account manager, and most revenue is invoiced monthly based on volumes and hours.

The challenge

Revenue was visible, but not in one place

Revenue information spread over invoicing exports and spreadsheets.
Every management question meant a new manual analysis.
With many clients and changing volumes, it was hard to see if everyone was invoiced at the right rate.
Two distinct business lines, but no separate revenue reporting.
No structured view of hours, revenue and price per hour per client.
Our approach

From scattered exports to a monthly reporting cycle

  1. Revenue reporting from Exact Online to Power BI

A fixed monthly workflow that brings revenue data from Exact Online into Power BI, with the development per client, per portfolio and per business line.
  2. A monthly invoice check per portfolio

Each month we compare invoicing per portfolio with the previous month. Is every client in there, and are the rates correct? Missing lines and wrong tariffs surface before they become lost revenue.
  3. Price per hour and margin per client

Hours registered per client combined with invoiced revenue, over several years. This shows which clients are underpriced and where a tariff conversation is needed.
  4. Business cases for automation

When the company considered automating part of its processing with an external robotics partner, Oakhill reviewed the business case against an in-house alternative.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most about this type of engagement.

What is included in monthly revenue reporting?

In this revenue reporting case the report shows revenue per client, per portfolio and per business line, compared with previous months, plus a check on whether every client was invoiced at the right rate.

Do you need a data warehouse to report in Power BI?

No. For many SMEs a direct, fixed monthly workflow from Exact Online into Power BI is enough. A central database becomes useful when you combine several sources or administrations.

How does a monthly invoice check work?

Every month the invoicing per portfolio is compared with the previous month. Missing clients, changed volumes and deviating rates stand out immediately, so they can be corrected before the month is closed.

Why calculate price per hour per client?

Because revenue alone does not show profitability. Combining registered hours with invoiced revenue shows which clients are underpriced and where a tariff conversation is needed. That insight was one of the main outcomes of this revenue reporting case.

Project Title

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
